斯坦福大学硕、博申请的截至日期是12月1日。同学们提交的申请材料包括：学校的网上申请表、申请费、Statement of purpose、推荐信（online）、成绩单、GRE成绩（无最低分数限制，看重math section）和TOEFL成绩（硕士项目要求最低89，博士最低要求100）。

关于硕士申请，学校要求申请机械工程硕士学位，必须取得工程，物理或与科学相关项目的本科学位（To be eligible for admission to the department,a student must havea BS in engineering,physics or a comparable science program.）。若获得的本科学位不是工程学科的，也同样可以提交硕士申请，只是相比较工科出身的学生，不那么占优势。还有一些同学，可能在已经获得其他项目的硕士学位之后，还想申请斯坦福大学的机械工程硕士。对于这种情况，斯坦福大学是不接受的，不管已取得的硕士学位是什么学科的，都必须申请博士项目。
